A recognized expert in soil fertility and organic waste recycling, and partner and work package leader in LEX4BIO and Nutri2Cycle EU H2020 projects, Lars Jensen, UCPH was invited by the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Parliament to speak at the public hearing on “Reducing impacts of fertilisers from production to end-use – increasing circularity in agriculture”, held on 29 November 2022.

His presentation entitled “Developing new bio‐based fertilisers from organic waste upcycling for optimal use in agriculture” took place during the first panel dedicated to the development of new technologies for new fertilizers based on recycled nutrients from organic waste. Lars stepped on his experience gained from several EU projects, including LEX4BIO and covered topics related to Nitrogen and Phosphorus hotspots on the European map, environmental emission from EU agriculture, N and P recycling potential from nutrient rich side streams, among others. With the steadily rising cost of fertilizers and EU’s transitioning to circular economy, research on utilizing organic waste as a source for bio-based fertilizer production is ever more important.
